What a third burner buys you
More burners give you another independently controlled zone. That can make it easier to sear over one section while finishing food gently elsewhere, or to keep a larger batch moving without crowding. It does not guarantee better heat distribution: burner design, grate dimensions, lid and heat deflectors also matter.
When two burners make sense
Choose a compact two-burner model when most meals are for one to four people, your patio or storage space is limited, and you primarily grill quick meals. Check that the actual primary cooking surface fits your usual pan, vegetables and proteins together. Fold-down shelves and cart dimensions can matter more in a tight space than headline square inches.
When three burners are worth it
The third burner is useful when you routinely feed a larger group, cook foods needing different heat levels at the same time or often use an indirect zone. Compare the primary grate area separately from any warming rack; warming racks add space but do not replace direct cooking area.
Don't shop by total BTU alone
BTU describes fuel input, not a direct score for cooking quality. A larger grill often has a larger total BTU rating simply because it has more burners and area. Weber’s own buying guidance cautions against treating a bigger BTU number as the deciding factor. Look for controllable heat, usable zones, serviceable parts and a warranty that fits your expected ownership period.
Compact weeknight setup
Start with a two-burner gas grill whose primary grate fits your typical meal. Check assembled dimensions, shelf clearance, fuel type, grease tray access and replacement grates or burners.
Mixed meals and regular guests
Look at three-burner models with independently controlled zones and enough primary area for food to cook without crowding. Confirm indirect-cooking instructions in the exact model’s manual.
Five checks before buying
- Measure the patio footprint with the shelves open and required clearances.
- Check propane versus natural-gas configuration; use only the fuel specified for that model.
- Compare primary cooking area and grate dimensions, not combined marketing area.
- Look up replacement burner, grate and ignition parts.
- Check grease access and whether you can clean the grill without disassembling half the cart.
