Why GPM matters as much as PSI
Pressure helps loosen soil; water flow moves it away and helps cover area. To show why the headline PSI can mislead, RYOBI lists one brushless electric washer at 3,000 PSI and 1.1 GPM, and a gas model at 3,300 PSI and 2.4 GPM. Those are two specific models, not a rule for every electric or gas washer. The gas example has more than twice the stated flow, which can be useful on a large slab. Actual cleaning speed also depends on the nozzle, technique and condition of the concrete.

Match the surface cleaner to the machine
A surface cleaner can make a wide, flat driveway more consistent and reduce wand fatigue, but the attachment must support the washer's pressure and flow. Too much deck width for the available flow can slow the rotating spray bar or leave streaks. Check the attachment's minimum GPM, maximum PSI, fittings and intended surface before ordering. Don't assume more pressure is safer
Start with the equipment maker's instructions and a test patch. Keep the spray moving and avoid damaged concrete, loose mortar and fragile adjacent materials. A narrow nozzle held too close can mark a surface regardless of whether the motor uses electricity or gas. Compare cord length, GFCI protection, realistic GPM, hose reach, storage and an attachment explicitly compatible with the chosen electric unit. Plan for more passes on a large slab if the flow is modest.
Before buying: measure the area, check outlet placement, and verify the manufacturer's surface-cleaner pairing.
Large slab or frequent cleanup
Compare rated GPM at working pressure, surface-cleaner compatibility, pump service information, hose length, weight and fuel storage. A gas unit may save time on big jobs, but maintenance is part of the purchase.
Before buying: check hose-bib flow against the washer manual and where you can operate and store the machine safely.
What to check at checkout
- Look at PSI and GPM together, preferably at comparable rated conditions.
- Confirm the surface-cleaner minimum flow and pressure limit, not just its diameter.
- Check your water supply and hose against the exact washer manual.
- Budget for the full setup: hose, compatible cleaner, detergent where appropriate, storage and gas-engine upkeep if relevant.
- Check the manufacturer's warranty and parts support for the exact model.
